Akule, a 14-year-old Native American recently chosen as a tribute to the Aztecs, is on his way to Tenochtitlan because he is a human sacrifice.  However, he gets rescued by two Spanish on the way, one of which is his father.  Cortes sends him back home with a group of friends, including the brothers Alberto and Rodriguez and his father Antonio, and they embark on a journey on which surprises, betrayal, and much more await them.
